Cornwall & Devon Post, 7 May 1898
Ashwater, Bere Alston, Calstock and Gunnislake were among
the places caught in a terrible thunderstorm on Monday (May Day). At
Gunnislake, 150 young children were taken from school to an adjoining
field after the boundary wall had been burst and the school flooded to
desk tops by a rush of water.
