West Briton, 13 September 1844
On the 4th instant, an inquest was held before Mr.
GILBERT HAMLEY, deputy coroner, in the parish of Calstock, on view of
the body of JOHN HARRIS. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased
was driving a wheel-barrow across one of the levels, when by some means
he slipped his foot, fell 23 fathoms, and was picked up quite dead. The
same young man, a few months ago, fell several fathoms, and broke his
thigh. Verdict, accidental death..
